How much weight will I lose?

The amount of weight-loss or improvements in other weight-related medical conditions can vary between people and rely on many factors including the type of surgery undertaken. In addition, we know that advancing age, poor adherence to dietary advice, low levels of physical activity and revision surgery may result in less impressive results following surgery.

During your consultation, Mr Alkhaffaf will discuss expectations with you and how much weight loss you may see. For a guide to how much weight-loss you may see, click here to use our weight-loss calculator.

How quickly will I lose weight?

The rate and pattern of weight loss differs between people following surgery. Some people may have rapid weight loss and others have slower weight loss. It is common for most people to see ‘stalls’ in weight loss which may last 2 or 3 weeks or even longer. It is important that you work closely with the bariatric team and that any concerns are reported to the them. For the majority of people, their lowest weight will not be achieved before 12 months.

Will I regain weight in the future?

The normal pattern which we see in all patients is to regain some weight after the lowest point – usually at around 12 months. Bariatric surgery is the single most effective treatment that we have to help people achieve long term and significant weight loss. The amount of weight which is regained very much depends on several factors including how well patient adopt healthy lifestyle choices.

What if I lose too much weight?

The body has an internal thermostat to know when to stop losing weight. It is extremely rare to lose ‘too much’ weight. However, if this happens, you will be supported by our team to ensure that excessive weight loss is properly investigated and treated.

How important is aftercare?

The care and support you receive before and after surgery is as important as the procedure itself. Whilst surgery is a powerful tool in helping you lose weight, the long-term success of maintaining weight-loss depends heavily on the healthy lifestyle choices that you continue to make. Most people will need help to reverse many years of learned behaviours when it comes to food, such as understanding what a balanced diet looks like, what to eat, when to eat, and how often to eat. Others may have underlying trauma which has resulted in them seeking comfort in food, and that of course will need to be addressed. Having access to an experienced team of doctors, dietitians, specialist nurses and psychologists both in the lead up to and after surgery is vitally important to achieving and maintaining results in the long-term.
